AN ANALYSIS OF TEACHERS' PROBLEMS AND STRATEGIES IN TEACHING WRITING: A CASE STUDY AT SMPN 35 PALEMBANG.--



Writing is a language of communication that uses writing media as a tool to convey information or communication. The purpose of writing is to instill understanding in the reader, inform to reader and motivate. The teacher is someone who teaches students how to write. In teaching writing the teachers will find the problem during the teaching process. The purpose of this study was to analyze teachers’ problems in teaching writing. The participants were teachers’ of English SMPN 35 Palembang who were selected by using purposive sampling. This study used qualitative design. Interviews were used to collect data. The interviews were administered to 2 teachers of English who the at eight grade students of SMPN 35 Palembang. The data obtained from the interview were analyzed by using thematic analysis. The results of the study showed that there were 3 problems faced by teachers and 2 strategies used by teachers in teaching writing. The teachers’ problems in teaching writing were : (1) Hard to motivate the students, (2) Level differences of students, and (3) Limited teaching time in class. The teachers’ strategies in teaching writing were: (1) group discussion and (2) games. Keywords: Problems, strategies, writing
