THE CORRELATION BETWEEN SPEAKING ANXIETY AND ENGLISH SPEAKING ACHIEVEMENT OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF MADRASAH ALIYAH AL-FATAH PALEMBANG.--



The main purpose of the present study was to empirically investigate the possible correlation and the influence between students’ speaking anxiety and speaking achievement with 36 students of the eleventh grade of Madrasah Aliyah AL-Fatah Palembang who were selected as the sample by using simple random sampling. Speaking test was done to measure students’ speaking achievement. By using oral Proficiency categories from Brown (2004) students’ speaking achievement was scored in terms of the four subskills of vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and fluency. Furthermore, Public Speaking Class Anxiety Scale (PSCAS) questionnaire developed by Yaikhong and Usaha (2012) was used to measure speaking anxiety containing 17 items. Pearson Product-Moment was used to find out the correlation between variables. The result showed that there was no significant correlation between students’ speaking anxiety and their speaking achievement with r= 0,221. It indicated that Ho was accepted and Ha was rejected. This study could have implications for English language teachers, students, and future researcher. Key words: Speaking Achievement, Speaking Anxiety
