Journalists covering business and economics need to emphasize simple questions that help explain complex issues such as tax cuts or deficit reduction. Reporters too often merely catalog the most recent developments in the marketplace. Instead, journalists should view explanation as their primary task. They should not be afraid to ask 'stupid' questions that may be on the minds of most Americans.
