Journalism and mass communication education at HBCUS: history and current issues. e-jurnal
Although HBCUs predate the Civil War, Lincoln University in Missouri offered the first journalism major in the 1940s. The number of schools offering majors in journalism and mass communication proliferated after the enactment of the major civil rights legislation in the mid 1960s. Despite low starting salaries for majors, at least 40--approximately 40 percent--HBCUs belong to the Black College Communication Association of schools offering some type of mass media major. Most of the schools media programs are not accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.
