TEACHER'S CHALLENGES ON TEACHING TOEFL TEST PREPARATION AT SMA NEGERI SUMATERA SELATAN
High-level of English proficiency tests, such as the TOEFL, open up opportunities for people in Indonesia to study at leading universities, both locally and abroad. Since Indonesian students are not native English speakers, some institutions help them to overcome the problems they face with exams. This qualitative research with case study aims to find of the teachers’ challenges in teaching TOEFL test preparation at SMAN SUMSEL. Data were collected by using in-depth interviews with teachers who teach TOEFL who have experience and quality of teaching TOEFL at SMAN SUMSEL. Thematic technique was used to analyze the interview data in depth. The results showed that teachers faced several challenges during teaching TOEFL preparation for high school students including students' differing language skills, lack of vocabulary mastery, their fatigue, class size, and time constraints. This finding recommends further ideas for conducting TOEFL test preparation programs as a more organized compulsory subject for secondary school students that can be integrated into the existing curriculum, and thus no longer seen as merely an extracurricular program.
