TEACHER'S PROBLEMS AND STRATEGIES IN TEACHING ENGLISH TO STUDENTS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES AT SLB NEGERI PEMBINA PALEMBANG.--



This study aimed at finding out the English teacher’s problems and strategies in teaching English for intellectual disability students. The design of this study was qualitative research in the form of a case study design. This study was conducted at SLB Negeri Pembina Palembang with one English teacher as the participant by using a criterion sampling technique. In the process of collecting data, the researcher used oneon-one interview through open-ended questions by following the aspects prepared in the interview guideline which consisted of thirty seven questions. In the data analysis, the researcher used thematic analysis in the form of a coding system which resulted some points of the teacher's problems in teaching English to intellectual disability namely students’ lack of English background knowledge, students’ behavioral issues, teacher’s difficulty in having students’ attention, teacher’s lack of training and environmentalrelated problems. Then, the researcher also found that the teacher's strategies in teaching English to intellectual disability namely giving more repetition, giving specific example and explanation, using songs for teaching and having students’ attention, and adapting the materials to suit the students’ ability.
