Paying the bill for goulash communism: Hungarian development and macro stabilization in a political-economy perspective (e-journal)
Hungary's economic development is unique because consistently since the 1960s its economic policy emphasized raising the standard of living, its government developed a comprehensive social welfare system comparable to those in Scandinavian countries, its economic development was gradual and its political climate remained relatively calm. Successive regimes expanded Hungary's social welfare system while avoiding politically unpopular economic decisions. The result is a currently stable political democracy that now faces grave political and economic problems in paying off its social debt.
