Professional preparation of academic technology leaders for higher education (E-Journal)

During the past two decades, higher education has seen significant evolution in instructional philosophies and methods, in technologies employed in teaching and learning, and in the roles and responsibilities of leaders of academic technology support services. Yet, recent studies have documented declining numbers of comprehensive instructional technology service units, as well as a declining percentage of academic technology leaders on college and university campuses who possess advanced degrees in instructional technology, suggesting that our graduate programs are not adequately preparing professionals to assume academic technology leadership positions at the postsecondary level. This article proposes a curriculum for master's and doctoral level programs, offered in a completely online environment, to prepare future academic technology leaders in higher education. The article emphasizes opportunities for the host institution(s) to also provide summer institutes, certification and continuing education programs, and other venues to help develop and nurture a more robust community of practice among academic technology leadership professionals.
