Communicating in Business and Technology: From Psycholinguistic Theory to International Practice. (Book review )

Jan M. Ulijn and Judith B. Strother's new book is unusual in the way it brings linguistic theory to bear on international business practices. It seems intended primarily for businesspeople who contemplate doing business in other countries, but it should interest anyone who wishes to understand the most recent studies of how humans actually produce and process information. With a reference list of nearly 500 items, the book would also make an excellent core text for a seminar on conducting business, in person and in writing, in international settings. It is itself an international collaboration: Ulijn (the Dutch-impaired will come fairly close by pronouncing it "oo-line") is a psychologist and linguist on the management faculty at Eindhoven Technical University in the Netherlands who regularly conducts training seminars on international negotiation in business. Strother teaches in the business and technical communication program at the Florida Institute of Technology.
