TEACHERS' PERCEPTIONS ON THE USE OF WHATSAPP IN SPEAKING ACTIVITIES : A CASE STUDY AT SMP PATRA MANDIRI 1 PALEMBANG
This study was intended to find out the teachers’ perceptions on the use of WhatsApp in speaking activities at SMP Patra Mandiri 1 Palembang. It used a qualitative research with a case study to find out the teachers’ perceptions on the use of WhatsApp in speaking activities. The study was conducted at SMP Patra Mandiri 1 Palembang with two teachers as the participants by using total sampling. In collecting data, the researcher used interview through open-ended questions. The data were analyzed by using thematic analysis technique. The results of this study shows that there were some aspect namely (1) the extension of classroom discussion, (2) monitoring the students’ performance, (3) teachers as facilitators, (4) times for preparing materials, (5) students’ timing in works, and (6) teachers’ group control. Then, by knowing the teachers’ perceptions on the use of WhatsApp in speaking activities, the teachers can teach speaking more creatively to avoid the students’ boredom in learning, so that, it can help the students’ get better result.
